It’s a rare year that we can skate outdoors on the ice in the Keweenaw (due to constant snow), but growing up in northern lower Michigan there were almost always a couple weeks of black ice on the lake I grew up on - a near endless rink, speed fueled by compression cracks shooting beneath your legs as you skated.
